Hiking in Hokkaido - Part 5: Maruyama

Everybody visiting Sapporo will hear the word “Maruyama” pretty soon, but mostly with “koen”, which means park. Maruyama Koen is home to the biggest shrine in Hokkaido and especially famous for its cherry blossom in spring. But it got its name from a small mountain just next to the park, Maruyama Mountain.

Maruyama is a National Natural Monument with mostly untouched virgin forest. It is only 225m high, so it’s a quite easy climb to the top.

At the trail entrance, you will encounter lines of Jizo and Kannon statutes dressed with nice little hats. And if you’re lucky, you might meet the Ezo squirrel as well!
